Hosting travelers from all over the world offers the unique privilege of intertwining stories, cultures, and traditions that enrich the journey and the heart. Today, a special atmosphere hangs in the air, tied to an unexpected and precious gift from afar.

My dear host Xiao, who arrived in Italy from China for a stay of a few months, surprised me with a special gift: delicious mooncakes , a gift to celebrate one of the most heartfelt and fascinating holidays in Eastern culture, the Mid-Autumn Festival ( Zhongqiu Jie - - 中秋节), also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, which is celebrated on September 25th . It is one of the most important holidays in Chinese culture, second only to New Year's, and giving mooncakes is an act of profound respect and a wish for prosperity, unity, and family harmony.

What is the Mid-Autumn Festival?

Celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, when the moon appears largest, brightest, and fullest of the entire year, this holiday has its roots in millennia of history and legends related to the harvest, the moon, and the goddess Chang'e .

In Chinese culture, the full moon is the quintessential symbol of reunion , fulfillment, and family unity. On this special night, families gather to dine together, gaze at the moon, and share wishes for peace and prosperity for the future.

The Meaning of Mooncake: A Dessert of Unity

Mooncakes are not simple sweets, but true treasure troves of art and tradition. Round in shape to evoke the perfection of the full moon, their crust is finely decorated with ideographic reliefs symbolizing concepts such as harmony , longevity , and good fortune .

Traditionally, they contain rich and enveloping fillings such as lotus seed paste, red bean paste, or dried fruit. They are meant to be cut into wedges and shared with loved ones, accompanied by a cup of hot tea.

When hospitality becomes a cultural exchange

Receiving this gift reminded me of the true beauty of my work. Hosting isn't just about providing a comfortable home or taking care of every detail of a stay, but about building bridges between different cultures, listening to stories, and making each person feel at home, even thousands of miles from their homeland.

A heartfelt thank you to Xiao for sharing such a sweet and profound piece of her culture with me. To her, and to all those celebrating around the world:中秋快乐 (Zhongqiu Kuaile) — Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!
