What to do in Rome on a rainy day? The answer lies among the historic cobblestone streets of Trastevere, one of the capital's most charming neighborhoods. Even when the sky turns gray, the Eternal City offers magical views and timeless masterpieces, sheltered from the elements.

Join us for a unique itinerary in Trastevere among the art of Raphael, historical photography exhibitions, solidarity and the authentic flavours of Roman cuisine.

1. Villa Farnesina: the art of Raphael and the myths of the sixteenth century

Our walking tour begins on Via della Lungara, home to the splendid Villa Farnesina. This sumptuous Renaissance residence was commissioned by the wealthy Sienese banker Agostino Chigi to architect Baldassarre Peruzzi, who embellished it with extraordinary frescoes by the greatest masters of the 16th century.

Among the unmissable stops inside the villa:

The Loggia of Psyche : a triumph of colors in which the famous Stories of Cupid and Psyche are told, conceived and painted by Raphael Sanzio together with his school (Giulio Romano, Sodoma and Raffaellino del Colle).

The Hall of Galatea : here is one of the Urbino artist's most famous masterpieces, the fresco of the Triumph of Galatea. Legend has it that Raphael drew inspiration for the nymph's face from the famous courtesan Imperia, beloved by Agostino Chigi.

2. Piazza Sant'Egidio and a special lunch break at Trattoria degli Amici

Once you've finished admiring the wonders of the Renaissance, a short stroll under an umbrella takes you to the heart of the neighborhood, Piazza Sant'Egidio.

Here, you'll be greeted by the touching hyperrealist bronze sculpture by Canadian artist Timothy P. Schmalz: it depicts a homeless man wrapped in a blanket on a bench, a work that invites reflection and introduces the neighborhood's spirit of solidarity.

Just steps away is Trattoria degli Amici, a true gem of Trastevere dining. Promoted by the social cooperative linked to the Community of Sant'Egidio, this restaurant employs people with disabilities, supported by professionals in the field. Dining here means supporting a valuable social project, enjoying excellent traditional Roman dishes in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

3. The Museum of Rome in Trastevere and the major photographic exhibitions

After lunch, without having to walk too far in the rain, just cross the square to enter the Museum of Rome in Trastevere.

Housed in a former Carmelite convent, this museum is one of the city's most active cultural centers for fine art photography and exhibitions dedicated to the memory of Rome and the great masters of international photography (such as the famous retrospective dedicated to Lisetta Carmi). It's the perfect stop for lovers of visual culture and black-and-white stories.

4. The Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere: golden mosaics and spirituality

Continuing a few meters, you reach the symbol of the district: the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere. Its origins date back to 340 AD, and it is considered one of the first official places of worship in Rome.

What to see inside and outside the basilica:

The golden mosaics on the façade and apse sparkle with light and tell the sacred story with timeless mastery.

The naves and chapels: the monumental three-nave structure houses the marvelous Altemps Chapel, a Baroque masterpiece that houses the icon of the Madonna della Clemenza.

The entrance portico: houses the statue of Saint Anthony, a point of reference for the faithful and visitors who stop there to leave a thought or a prayer.

5. Alleys, cobblestones, and the magical atmosphere of Rome in the rain

Despite the rain, exploring the narrow streets of Trastevere has an irresistible charm. When the rain falls on the classic cobblestones, the historic alleys reflect the lights of the shops and cafes, creating an even more romantic and evocative atmosphere.

You can end the day by seeking refuge in a small café for a spiced afternoon tea, or sit down in a typical wine bar for a delicious Roman aperitivo.

The rain doesn't diminish Rome's beauty; on the contrary, it makes it even more poetic.
